How well do you know your History?...
A co/worker and I got talking about our menstrual cycle and started wondering how people used to deal with it back in the day.
What we found was pretty interesting so I thought I would share.
Ancient time
*The oldest printed medical document shows the use of soft papyrus tampons by Egyptian women in the fifteenth century B.C.
*Roman women used wool tampons.
*Women in ancient Japan fashioned tampons out of paper, held them in place with a bandage, and changed them 10 to 12 times a day. Can you believe that? That is a lot of bathroom breaks--I wonder if I could get away with doing that....uhm..!
1902 Menstrual Belts
Women could buy commercial menstrual belts (see figure below) at least by 1891 or simply use old rags or other absorbent material. Some would use nothing at all. Disgusting!

1921-the First Kotex ad

1931 Tampons

Like mentioned before tampons where used from the very beginning, but 1929 Dr. Earle Haas invented the first applicator tampon and it was patented in 1931!

1940-1970

1970 Adhesive Pads

Don't you just love this ad? I think it is so Chicky-I love it!!

1970 the first adhesive pad came out which killed the sanitary napkins belt industry--thank heavens! Now I know why I was not born before my time, because someone knew I would NOT be able to handle those belts.

This is just the gist. If you would like to learn more you can go to the Museum of Menstruation (Link).

Wow- can you believe that we had a belt in our house? I remember opening a little white lunch bag and inside it was this strange elastic belt thingy :)
Thank goodness we were born in this day and age.
